Saint-John-of-God-Hospital
Saint John of God Hospital is a service of the St John of God Hospitaller Services. It is an independent acute psychiatric teaching hospital with 183 in-patient beds and is one of the leading European providers in mental health treatment and care.

The Hospital currently provides specialist services in Substance Misuse, Psychotic Disorders, Eating Disorders, Psychiatry of Later Life and Adolescent Disorders. The Hospital is affiliated with University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University and the University of Limerick for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professional programmes. An extensive clinical research programme operates throughout the Order's Mental Health Services.

Specialist Treatment Programmes 



Adolescents

The primary aim of the Adolescent Unit is to provide a safe and structured environment in which the young person can be thoroughly evaluated and a successful therapeutic programme provided. The intention is to enable a quick recovery from crisis and an early return to optimum functioning within the family, social and educational milieu.

Our admission policy for young people focuses on the assessment and treatment of emotional disorders and early onset psychotic disorders in post-pubescent young people.

Among the disorders treated are:
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Schizophrenia
The Unit has established itself as a national centre of excellence for this highly specialised area of psychiatry

Eating Disorders

The Eating Disorders Recovery Programme at St John of God Hospital was established in 1995 and is a distinct programme for the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa within our services.

The programme includes:

Assessment; Therapy Contract; Therapy Groups; Weight restoration programme; Individual sessions; Family sessions.

Topics addressed in the groups include education, body image, eating behaviours, goal attainment, physical exercise, socialisation and family meetings.

Psychosis

Psychosis is one of the most disabling of the major psychiatric disorders. It affects men and women from all social classes and racial backgrounds. Over the years, our hospital has specialised in research into psychosis.

Research

The St John of God Research Unit has gained national and international recognition for its work attracting grants from the Irish Health Research Board and the results have been presented by our medical staff at conferences and meetings in this country and abroad.

The expertise of the hospital consultant staff is recognised nationally. This is confirmed by the increasing referral of patients to them by doctors seeking a further expert opinion. The results of research findings have shaped our assessment procedures and treatment plans.

Dublin County Stress Clinic

Treatment is provided for a broad range of stress and anxiety disorders, including: Anxiety, Depression, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Disorder, Psychosomatic Disorders. The clinic has a particular interest in Occupational Stress related illness.

Psychiatry of Later Life

Caring for the mental health needs of the elderly was part of the founding character of our hospital when it opened in 1882. From the beginning, elderly people have been cared for in a specialized unit with the hospital. The assessment and treatment programmes cover the wide range of psychiatric disorders which occur in old age.

St Raphael's Suite, where the specialized unit is located, adheres to the principle of the elderly person receiving treatment in an age-appropriate milieu.

Substance Misuse

The aim of the Addictions Treatment Programme is to attain the best possible outcome by facilitating the person's recovery from addiction. Individuals are assisted in gaining insight into alcohol and addiction problems. Helping the family and other concerned persons to gain more understanding of addictions and how to cope with the person's recovery is also a priority

Alcohol

Richard Pampuri Unit
The Richard Pampuri Unit was founded in 1961 as a unit for the treatment of alcoholism within St John of God Hospital.

It is named after the Italian Brother/Doctor of the St John of God Order who died in 1930 and who was canonized in 1989. The Unit is integrated to cater for both men and women. The setting and hospital layout, surrounded by creatively designed grounds and gardens, provide a peaceful and healing environment.

HOW TO FIND SAINTJOHN OF GOD HOSPITAL

The hospital is located in Stillorgan on the Dublin-Bray Road (N11), five miles from the city centre.There is ample parking throughout the grounds.The hospital is easily accessible by bus - numbers 46, 46A, 84 and 145 pass the entrance.

The DART station at Blackrock is just one mile away and is served by a feeder bus which passes White's Cross, a few minutes walk from the hospital. Access to the hospital can also be made via the M50 (Exit 14 Dun Laoghaire Southbound and Exit 13 Sandyford/Dundrum Northbound) and the LUAS terminus at Sandyford
