Glaucoma surgery (Trabeculectomy) is performed for individuals with glaucoma in whom medical treatment with drops or laser treatment has been ineffective.
The purpose of the surgery is to create an additional drainage channel for fluid from the eye in order to lower the pressure within the eye. The drainage channel is created in the white part of the eye inside the conjunctival membrane lining the outside of the eye. The operation site is usually under the upper lid. The fluid from the drainage site collects within the membrane covering the eye and is absorbed back into the blood circulation
