Are You Thinking About Losing Weight?
Losing weight is something that the majority of adults will attempt at some stage of their lives. There have never been so many ways to lose weight. We are surrounded by messages telling us about 'quick ways' to lose pounds. From a health point of view, weight loss is only good for you when you can keep the weight off.
There are health risks from continually losing and gaining weight (“yo-yo dieting”). If you are serious about losing weight, the following are a number of things that you should think about.
Why are you overweight?
There can be many reasons for being overweight.
You may not be as active as you used to be, you may be experiencing health problems or you may be turning to food as a form of comfort in difficult times.
Whatever the reason, it is important to be honest with yourself about the reasons for being overweight.
Who is going to help you with weight loss?
Even if you decide to lose weight on your own, you will probably find that you are more successful if you have the support of your friends and family.
Many people find that asking their GP to refer them to a dietician can be a great support, while others like to attend weight loss groups or special programmes and clinics.
Whatever support you decide to use will be up to you.
Remember that losing weight is only part of living in a healthy way. You should also consider regular exercise, reducing smoking and cutting back on alcohol intake.
How will I know if my weight loss plan is suitable?
Whatever diet plan you decide to use, it is important to ask yourself the following question, "Can I keep this plan up in the long-term?"
If the answer is no, then you are either on the wrong plan or you are attempting to make too many changes too quickly. Gradual, sustained weight loss is the goal and this can best be achieved by changing your diet and lifestyle in a way that you can maintain.
Also remember that some diets that cause fast weight loss may be lacking in essential nutrients and may be bad for your health in the long term. If you are worried about how nutritious and healthy your diet is, it is a good idea to discuss your weight loss plan with your doctor.
